Chemotherapy

posted by:

Today, Breast Cancer is the second leading cancer causing death in America ‘s women. Researches are still working around the clock to find new treatments that can help to prevent this disease, along with developing and testing new treatments that could possibly save many lives, so that we can start to detect Breast Cancer earlier. My mother was lucky enough to have gone to her healthcare professional at the time she did, which they were able to find the Breast Cancer, and she went into surgery immediately to have her Breast Cancer removed. I thank God every single day that she is still here with my family and I, and I send my thanks to the amazing doctors who helped to save her life.

Since her Breast Cancer was so aggressive, she had to have a combination of treatments such as a Mastectomy, Reconstructive Surgery, Chemotherapy…and of course, the love and support of her family and friends. I cannot forget her little dogs, who played a major role in her Breast Cancer recovery, by them always comforting her by laying on her lap, whenever she would be in pain, feeling sick, or just resting on the couch. I have to say that animals are such a great way to help a loved one when they are going through a hard time, whether it is Breast Cancer, or just one of those bad days that we all seem to have at one point in our lives or another. Like life, Breast Cancer has its ups and downs as well. It is like walking along a rocky road that some must travel along, but with strength and courage, if you keep walking; you will end up finding a paved pathway ahead in the distance. My mother walked down that road, and she was so strong, never giving up hope. She always has her little dogs at her side. I call my mother’s dogs, her little barking therapists. I believe that love can heal more than medicine sometimes. Even without words being spoken… miracles can happen…I have seen them happen many times now.

It is very important to have a Mammogram, which is the most important first step in detecting Breast Cancer early, because of the technology; Doctors can find early signs of  Breast Cancer by studying changes in the breasts. It is the greatest way to find  cancer at an early stage, so please do not hesitate with your life and loved ones, and schedule your mammogram as soon as possible.

I made an appointment myself, and it was not as bad or scary as I thought, and it is well worth saving your life. Mammograms not only help detect Breast Cancer, but from women who get screened, who may have symptoms of Breast Disease. Such symptoms of Breast Disease include retraction of the nipple, discharge coming out of the nipple, pain in the breast, lumps, and dimpling of the breasts’ skin. I would like to add a few tips below, to help you get a better Mammogram…

1. The day of your Mammogram appointment, make sure you do not wear any deodorant, make-up or powder under your arms or armpits ( I know I feel uncomfortable not wearing any deodorant, so just put it on after your appointment, or keep it in your purse of car if you are worried about that, and apply it when you are done with your Mammogram ;)…If you forget, don’t worry, you will be provided UCI wipes and something to remove any deodorant before they start your procedure. Remember to check if your breasts are becoming tender if it is around the time of your period, because you need to reschedule if this happens, for one week after your period has stopped.

If you have had a Mammogram already or you are about to have one done and are worried about your breasts becoming tender, don’t be shy to ask your health care professional for a free cushioned  breast pad, if it is not provided already before your examination. My mother said it was much more comfortable using them while having her Mammogram done, so make sure to ask, if they do not provide you with one. You should always inform the staff about any previous mammograms or tests you have had done from any other  Health Care Provider before scheduling your appointment for your Breast Exam. The more information your doctors know about you and your health, the more they can help, and make the best of your experience.

Any and all symptoms you have had, should be fully explained BEFORE your exam, and remember to just relax. It’s very important to go in with a positive attitude, and to sit down and describe all problems or things related to your breasts, that may be worrying you or even if it may be something smallit could help with your Breast Cancer exam. The more they know, the better the outcome of your procedure will go, and the more they will be able to help you. Make sure you get all the information you need to know how their office works dealing with the time period of calling back with the results of your Mammogram, but usually they should give you instructions, which you should ask them to print out for you. It is also not a bad idea to ask for any information on Breast Cancer or self-Breast exam kits they may carry. It is always a good idea to have a Self Breast Exam kit, or instructions from your Healthcare provider on how to do so at home, which you can pass along to family or friends. Spread the word to the people in your life who have not taken the time yet to schedule an appointment for a mammogram, or even invite them to go with you. It is always nice to spend time with those we care for, especially when you realize the importance of time and how it seems to fly right by us…so bringing along a co-worker, friend, or relative would be a chance for both partys to make an appointment, gain knowledge about the subject, and talk about it together while you both are there. I believe going with someone you know makes you feel more comfortable and relaxed while waiting for your procedure/appointments because you know you have love and support with you, whether they are their for an appointment also, or you just have good company, support, and maybe some interesting conversation. It is best to go in with a good attitude, accepting whatever the outcome may turn out to be, because this is life, and we should all live it.  Procrastination is natures natural assassin….so we must stop procrastinating ( Which I am working on myself ;) ). I went along with my mother many times to her appointments, and she really enjoyed my company and support while she waited to be seen by the many doctors we visited together, and we always had a good talk  before and after, and I could tell that by me being there with her, helped her stay calm and more relaxed than her going alone. I always try to make her feel better or  just put a smile on her face when she would look worried about something… I would say something stupid or funny to make her laugh, like I always do, and everything ends up going fine after that. We can never stop the negative occurances that seem to happen throughout life, but we can get through them together.

I always went with my mother to her treatments, which helped her, knowing she had a loved one their…and she knew I would always and forever be there for her, and I continue to be to this day. She is my inspiration, my mother, and she is doing much better now and I am so grateful to have her here with me.  It is a long rocky road to recovery depending on the diagnosis, but if you keep Hope-Faith-Love and Strength…the road ahead is smooth and beautiful. My mother and  family traveled down this rocky road, to find a paved path to happiness and love, and it has made all of us closer than ever before…and I realized how important life is, and how beautiful it can be if you take the time to appreciate it.

God Bless you all, and Thank everyone for all of your many kind comments that I am still going through, and will continue to do every day. Also please check out the new Pages I have added to Breast Cancer Awareness, such as the “Breast Cancer Videos” Page, which has many videos that will help you to visually see many of the topics you might be looking for; And also new treatments and breaking news videos on breast cancer. I hope you find them interesting and helpful. :)

Final Chemo Therapy Treatment

posted by:

My mother has finished her chemotherapy with success. Chemotherapy is a rocky road, I must say. A few weeks after she had started Chemotherapy for her Breast Cancer, she knew that she would eventually start loosing all of her hair; so she went to the local beauty school where she knew some girls that worked there, and she had them shave her head, “to get it over with” she had came home and said to me and my family. I felt so bad for her when she pulled off the hat she was wearing after she had her head shaved, and she started to cry, and then I couldn’t help but cry myself. I gave her the biggest hug I have ever given her, and I looked at her and told her that she was still as beautiful as ever, if not more now than before. The next day I went out to the mall and some stores looking for some cute scarves and hats, and I ended up buying her a really nice wigg. When I gave it to her, she felt a little embarressed to wear it, but appreciated me going out of my way to try to make her feel better. We laughed and joked around, as she tried it on…I had to help her some, because I think she put it on backwards the first time ;) .
One evening my father made a comment about her hair sticking up, when it was growing out a little bit, and that really hurt her feelings. I was so upset that he had even said anything, but he wasn’t trying to be mean- but that one comment made my mom go from walking out the door with him to go out to dinner- to turning around and going and putting on the nice wigg I had boughten her, and she said to him, “Do I look better now??” I laughed and said, ” Mom, your so pretty, whether you wear a wig or not, don’t take what he said to heart. She ended up taking off the wigg after a minute and we all were laughing. I guess in time, like everything that changes, we get use to it. Everyone got use to my mom having short hair, and now she likes it. Im actually a little jealous of her because I wish I did not have this thick hair to blow dry and straighten all the time. I have sooo much hair it’s crazy! Besides loosing hair, while she was going through chemotherapy, she tasted food differently than before. I went out to eat with my mom at a restuarant she loved one day, and she ordered something she use to really like, but when it came and she tasted it-she couldn’t eat it because of the chemotherapy changing her taste in foods. I felt awful! But things changed and she found different foods that she could taste better and actually liked, so don’t worry so much about it ladys. If you are going through chemotherapy or are deciding if you may decide to, please talk to your family and your doctor more about it. Your health care provider will give your medication for any symtoms that are involved with the process, and in no time you will be feeling better and on your way to recovery. :) Chemotherapy saved my mother’s life, and I’ve learned alot from the whole process, like to be strong no matter what comes your way…and that even if you have no hair, you are still beautiful. It is whats inside of you that really matters, and if other’s don’t see that, than they are not worth your time. To be truely beautiful, is to be strong, supportive, kind, and non judgemental…along with other factors that would take forever to write down- but my point is that sometimes we have to go through some tough situations, and if we can make it through them, we just become stronger. Life is so precious, and time seems to fly by, so enjoy and embrace your life and time with those you love.

I want to thank everyone for all of your kindness and thoughtful comments, it has been awhile since my last post, and it really was touching to read all of my responses. I created this website, to honor my mother, who has been a truely strong woman through this whole process. Life is a special journey, or maybe an adventure, never knowing exactly what lies ahead. There will always be a rocky road, and it is up to you to follow the detour sign to the smooth road that you know you can take instead… Happiness is yours, because it is you that is in control of your lifes direction, so my advice is to live your life with a positive and accepting aspect…

Coping after Mastectomy

posted by:

The picture posted below is of my mother and her dogs as they all relax on the couch, a few days after her mastectomy. A mastectomy is a surgical removal of the entire breast, and for several centuries has been used as a great way to treat breast cancer. Currently, woman or even men who are diagnosed with breast cancer (Yes, men can also be diagnosed with breast cancer, yet many do not speak of this for some reason, and some do not even know.) are receiving the modified mastectomy, which involves preserving as much of the breast tissue as possible, which was not the case in the 1970′s and 1980′s; When they would remove all of the breast tissue, along with the chest muscles, lymph nodes inside of the armpit, because they believed back then that if they removed as much of the tissue as possible- the cancer would most likely not be able to form again.
My mother had her whole breast removed, and then soon after, had reconstruction surgery. When I brought her home, she was on heavy medication for the pain, so I helped walk her to the car drove her home. Make sure after any surgery that you have a friend or family that will be waiting to drive you home. The doctors said that she could not have any sugar, but my mother, being strong willed and on heavy medication and in pain, emotionally and physically, wanted some “jello”. I will never forget how much we were laughing, especially me, when she kept telling me to bring her jello. She told me that she was a nurse and that it was fine for her to have a little of it, and that it was sugar free, so it would be fine! My father did not want to give her anything she was asking for but some crackers, and I felt awful, and ended up sneaking her that jello . After she had something in her stomach to make her feel better from fasting and a long day at the hospital, she was exhausted as I made a comfy modified bed for her; with a table where she could reach easily for a drink. I checked on her throughout the night, making sure was was okay and didn’t have a fever. The next day, when her mind was a little bit clearer from the medication wearing off, I was talking to her about how she was acting and what she was saying to me, and we laughed so hard I was crying. Bad things sometimes bring out good things.
The dogs had to be put in another room while she slept, because I couldn’t have them jumping onto her and possibly hurting her after she had just had two major surgery’s. The three dogs we have always know how to make my mom and whole family feel better, and they can always somehow tell when she is in need of some love!  She keeps a pillow on her chest, to protect herself,  just in case one of the dogs accidentally jumps up on her! They continue to help her along her road to recovery, giving her the unconditional love and support she needs, as well as some kisses and laughs… She continues to be strong as she recovers, and has been more positive than ever about every new day that comes.

Support..Chemotherapy..and Surgery

posted by:

When anyone hears of “Chemo”, it overwhelmes not only the person diagnosed with Breast Cancer, but every loved one and person in their life. Even people around the world who have not experienced the feeling of being diagnosed, or having someone close to them going through this battle…really care and give tremendous support to those who must go through this battle. We must really believe that this is a battle we will all overcome and win in time. When you believe, nothing is impossible.

My mom is currently going through six months or longer, of Chemotherapy, and is having her reconstruction surgery done. The day before my mothers first Chemotherapy Treatment, she was very nervous, because she had been to the Cancer Center before and had said to me,” Jessica…I really don’t want you driving me to my first treatment…me and your dad went for the first time and ended up having to reschedule after speaking with the doctor there….it’s just very emotional jess”. She told me that what you see there is can be depressing. I understood after I refused to say no, and went with her to her appointment. My dad had went with her before to the cancer center, and was very emotional, and that is normal for anyone. When you see a loved one going through something serious and life threatening, you seem to feel hopeless, when you really giving them hope. Being there helps more than words can say. My mother told me she felt bad about everyone worrying so much about her as she was going to her chemotherapy appointments, and I told her that she did not plan on developing Breast Cancer, or putting anyone through an emotional and stressful situation; And that we all cared about her so much and would be by her side no matter what happened. My family is the most important thing to me, and that is one reason why I started this website. My dad and mom today are doing great, and they actually seem to go out on more dates together than before she had cancer. I believe sometimes in life it takes something terrible happening for something beautiful to occur after…

My dad was the one to take my mother to her first treatment at the Cancer Center, as she went under a six hour procedure, just after having an appointment to have her chemotherapy the day before. My dad, sister, and I waited anxiously in the waiting room as my mother was having her surgery. I couldn’t help but to pray in my mind, and to try to stop all of the thoughts from racing around in my head as I waited for the doctor to come speak with us in the waiting room. I have to say, waiting there gave me and my family alot of time to think about everything. It really awoken something inside of us all… to feel the seriousness of this disease…and it also made me realize what was really important in my life. It was no longer that brand new car, or thinking of what movie to watch… or that new outfit or purse we had to have…it was having my mother and my family. I realized how I hadn’t been there like I should have been in the past, and that it took this illness and the whole entire situation, to awaken everyone to what it was that we were really living for.  We all love, and without love, what do you have? I have much to be grateful for, and I thank the doctors for my moms successful first Chemo Treatment and the last. After having a really nice talk with my mother the first day of her chemotherapy appointment, I tried to give her as much support as I could before she and my father left; And I will never forget when she came back from her first day feeling positive and fearless…after all of the support of course ;) .

Her first side effects were mainly being very tired, and as the next day when the medicine was kicking in more, she began to have bowl movements and discomfort of her stomache. She had to go to work the next night, ( She is still a night nurse at an assistant living facility, taking care of hundreds of patients a night until early in the morning ) and had to run to the bathroom quite a few times she had told me ( Sorry to be so blunt, but it is what happens from the medicine ), so a change of cloths is good if you are planning on working or going out after your treatment, just in case. Your Health Care Doctor will give you medicine to help with the side effects of the Chemotherapy or other treatment you are going through, so don’t worry so much. My mother was a bit nauseas for a little while from the Chemotherapy, but she was given medication that helped her through all of her side effects, or most of them at least. Talk to your doctor about the side effects and medications that will be available for you after and during treatment. Ask your doctors when you will start feeling the effects of the medication, and when you should take the medication they will give you. The more information you get, the better, and also tell your Health Care Professional about any and all symptoms you are having and keep in touch with them often, and make sure to get a phone number in case of any emergency.

Chemotherapy also changes how you taste some of the foods you were use to eating before, so don’t be too surprized if you bite into your favorite food and it seems to not be your quite favorite anymore ;) . But don’t get worried or upset, in time you will learn about other foods that you like and can taste better.  Remember that your recovery is more important than a food you like at the time and know that after the time flys by like my mothers did, you will return to eating what foods you love! You will be able to taste normally in time. Another good thing to do is to look into certain foods that fight cancer. I recently gave my mother a book and ever since, she has been changing her diet some. There are foods out there that have natural ingredients in them, that will help your immune system and taste great…while fighting Cancer.

If you focus on the negative of this, then the likely outcome will be negative. It is like waking up late and letting something small ruin your day by thinking negatively, instread of moving on and getting past that missed alarm clock…If you let the bad thoughts consume your mind-nothing good is going to come from it…but if you can just get past that first bad experience and move forward positively, good things are in the near future. I keep my thoughts and prayers high for my mother and family, and for every single person reading this out there, that everything is going to be okay, once you take that first step.

To anyone out there who wants to leave a comment on my blogs, saying that “they are not sure this is true…but thanks for leaving a post” My mother does have Breast Cancer, and my family is going through a very hard time right now, along with millions of others. Everything I write here is from my heart, sincere, and TRUE…along with information i’ve gathered from doctors that have treated my mother and more. Thank you for your time and to those who leave supportive comments, and can understand what I and others are going through, and especially for your respect and kindness. God Bless you all. Be strong. With Hope all things are possible….we just have to wait sometimes…

” We should not let our fears hold us back from pursuing our hopes. “  - John F. Kennedy

Breast Cancer is something that I wanted to learn more about, especially ever since the day my mother called me after her doctors appointment, to tell me the bad news of her test. She explained to me she had been diagnosed with  Stage 2 Breast Cancer and had also tested positive for the HER-2 gene. I was really emotional, and I just kept hoping that she was joking or that I was in some bad dream…But I knew I wasn’t. Thinking my mother may not have that long to live broke my heart, so I just prayed, and tried to research as much information as I could on her diagnosis. I felt my heart drop into my stomach as I heard those words. She told me not to worry, and that she would be going into surgery for a Mastectomy, and then possible reconstructive surgery the next week. It took me a moment,to hold back my tears, as I tried to find the right words to say, to help comfort her. As we both pushed the end buttons on our phones, I dropped to the floor and rested my head down, crying as I had flashbacks of when I was little and use to be scared of the dark. I remembered all of the times I would sneak into my parents bedroom at night, and waking my mother up quietly, and asking if I could sleep next to her.  My mother always knew how to comfort me when I was scared or needed help, and that really opened my eyes about the importance of me being there for her at this difficult time, and to learn more about Breast Cancer Awareness.
